Biography

I have spent the last five years working alongside Suzette Woodward as a member of the Sign up to Safety Culture Team. Through our work we developed a deeper understanding of what it means to work safely and helped over 500 organisations from across all settings in healthcare apply this locally.

We focused on the importance of a balanced approach to safety, the need to urgently address the blame culture, and the need for a restorative just culture, together with the importance of kindness, joy, curiosity, humility, appreciation and gratitude, and the clear links between staff health and well-being and safer care.

I spent the ten years prior to that advising companies, public sector bodies and charities on communications approaches that deliver meaningful action and engagement.

My first foray into Patient Safety was in 2008 as part of the campaign team who ran Patient Safety First before being invited to join Sign up to Safety (launched by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care) in 2014.

In 2015-2016 I chaired a strategic advisory group of communications professionals in patient safety, working with organisations and programmes including NHS England, NHS Improvement, Q and HEE to share plans and key messages relating to patient safety.

In 2018 I helped with the development of the #QIComms Charter launched at IHI in Amsterdam 2018, which aims to help drive improvement and change in quality improvement through strategic communications.
