Biography

I am Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at Keele University. Until April 2020, I was Head of Clinical Biochemistry and Research & Innovation Director at the University Hospitals of North Midlands. I represented the Royal College of Pathologists as Clinical Chemistry panel member on the Keele University Benchmarking Service. From 2007-11, I was Vice-chair and then Chair of the West Midlands Association for Clinical Biochemistry. I was Associate Editor for the Annals of Clinical Biochemistry from 2005-09 and am a reviewer for over 25 academic and clinical journals and grant-awarding bodies. I have lectured at a range of clinical and academic meetings as well as on both the Regional and National training courses for Trainee Clinical Biochemists.

I am an enthusiastic clinical researcher and am currently the Director of Research and Development Director for the Trust. In 1999, I was awarded the Professors’ Prize, a prestigious award, sponsored by the Academic Forum for Clinical Biochemistry, to clinical scientists who have made a ‘substantial and sustained contribution to research in Clinical Biochemistry’. I have published over 200 peer-reviewed full papers and around 30 book chapters/reviews.  My more recent interests have focused on investigating the prevalence and impact of inappropriate pathology test requesting and how requesting behaviour can be changed to improve patient outcomes. I have been a grant holder on three Health Foundation grants to date and have a number of quality improvement projects.

I am rapidly developing into a QI enthusiast and have begun to apply QI methodology in into my projects. In terms of the wider Q Community, I can provide a clinical laboratory perspective on other projects and would be happy to collaborate.
