Biography
Adam Mapani currently leads the Medical Retina nursing team at Moorfields, which puts him at the forefront of developing practice in a wide range of clinical and organisational areas. As well as his clinical role in the management of patients with diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and AMD ocular conditions, Adam is also very involved in education both nationally and internationally. He has trained allied healthcare professionals at Moorfields, UCL and internationally in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Europe, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Kenya. He is the current co-chair for the national and international preceptorships on delivery of anti–vascular endothelial growth factor therapy at Moorfields. Adam is the founder and chairman for United Kingdom Intravitreal Injection Group(UKIVT Group) for allied healthcare professionals in Ophthalmology administering injections.
Adam has spoken both nationally and internationally, and has published papers in peer review journals. As an international Educator, he has delivered Keynote speeches in USA, Europe and Asia. His evidence-based practice approach to patient care lays great emphasis on maximising non-medical staff development in an ophthalmic setting in ever increasing boundaries of practice.
He works collaboratively with the medical teams in driving service improvement initiatives forward to achieve excellence. He pioneered first nurse led Diabetes Secondary assessment clinics, innovative pathways for AMD and virtual digital enhanced clinics. Since his appointment as the lead Nurse in the Medical Retina Service there has been a major transformation in patient care, service efficiency and nurse led clinics.
Adam has won various ophthalmology awards over his 15-year career, most recently leading his team to win a Macular Society award for the Best Clinical Service category. In 2017 he was announced winner of the UK Ophthalmology Honours awards: Outstanding Ophthalmology Nurse. In 2019 The Ophthalmologist Power list, mentors category Top Ten.
Adam founded Abalon Trust, UK registered Charity (1167443) for development eye healthcare services in Zimbabwe. He has established education pathways for allied healthcare professionals including high school leavers in Zimbabwe. His Charity work was recently acknowledged in the Trust bulletin, local medial houses in Zimbabwe (ZBC) where has volunteered in teaching, training, screening and care delivery in the marginalised communities. He is passionate about improving eye health services in developing nations.
